I have to do a graduation cake this weekend and I stuck on how to make the tassle any suggestions? TIA
Maria
Thanks, did you find that in the cake decorating section or in the crafts clay section? I spend so much time and money in Michaels it's crazy!!!
I have never worked with fondant, but I have made tassles for graduation cakes using embordary floss in the appropriate color. Make a cardboard piece the size you want the tassle strings and wrap the floss around it, slide off and put a length of the floss through the circle and tie it off. Wrap a length of floss around the top part to look like a regular tassle and tie off. Cut the threads on the bottom. Attach to cake. ![]()
Hope this helps.
If you have a KA mixer with the pasta attachment, you can also you the angel hair pasta maker. Feed it through and catch all the strands in the middle. Fold in half and then pinch on top to bind together. Take one strand and wind it around the pinched top to give it a finished look, and trim the strands so that they are all the same size. Let dry and then you can use.
just to let you know about the metal clay gun, I just got one and it works really well, but make sure you clean it out...mine had a patch of some type of black soot substance embedded in the inside so I had to soak in soapy water, then clean with a q-tip and soak and clean to get it all out. Not sure what it was, but it was gross.
I've made several by cutting a square of fondant. If using one color, simple cut strips of fondant without going all the way up. Leave enough at the top to bunch together. If you're adding another color do the same thing same length but different width and bunch together. Put the second color on top and fold the two together at the top. I'll attach a pic of one. Hope it helps!!
I used the metal clay gun ONCE on fondant and the silver from the inside came out all over it!!! It peeled right off the inside - right in the trash it went!! So please be careful. I went back and bought the plastic green clay gun and haven't had a problem.
Thank you all for your suggestions I'll try the garlic press tonight!!!
