My friend is alergic to gluten. There is a gluten free flour; do you know if it's sold in ordinary grocery stores? Also, I need a gluten free cake recipe. (Is there any gluten in buttercream icing?) I want to make her a cake that she can actually eat!
I take it your friend has Celiac Disease. I do also and have tried more than my fair share of cake mixes out there that are gluten free. Most of them I have found to be horrible but there are a few good ones. Gluten free Pantry has a few and you can purchase those in some health stores and online. Just google Gluten free pantry. I also have a FANTASTIC carrot cake recipe, although it requires a little work it is well worth it. I have fed it to nonceliacs that have no clue it's wheat free. Let me know if you'd like me to email it to you.
Also most frostings that are homemade don't have gluten in them. just watch out for the flavorings as they could if they are alcohol based. you would have to call the company to have them check.
I found a great one on Allrecipes.com. If you type gluten free cake in the search field on their page it will come up. The one that I baked was a yellow cake and it was pretty good. I made it for my brother in law and his mother and they loved it. It also had really good reviews.
HTH,
Michelle
I think the truffle cake in the Whimsical Bakehouse book would be considered gluten free since it is flourless. It is to die for.
Maybe search for flourless cakes, even passover cakes--if they don't have any matzo meal or matzo cake meal.
Good luck. You are a SWEET friend. ![]()
