I made this baby shower cake for a co-worker at school. We're surprising her tomorrow. I had bought some new cake toys (daisy cutter, fondant embosser), and wanted to play. Of course, I was too ambitious for my skill level! The icing is pinker than I intended. I didn't make the fondant daisies and bear early enough to dry properly. It's very humid today and they were drooping all over the place. The ribbons broke and the bow loops were too thick! I managed to piece it all together and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
The biggest yuck is that the white freezer paper I used underneath the cake is already getting that greasy stain around the cake! I've always used freezer paper and it's been great. Is it because of the humidity? What should I use instead???
I'm only charging the $25 for the ingredients for this cake, and it's for my friends at work, so I know that no one will complain. There's no way I can move this cake to another surface. I would really appreciate your suggestions and constructive criticism. icon_smile.gif

This is a great example of "we are our own worst critic". I don't work with fondant, so maybe there are some things in there that I don't see (leave that to the fondant experts on here), but I'm telling you, anyone who gets a cake like that will be THRILLED! It is so darn cute!!!!

It's pinker than you wanted. THEY don't know that. They see a gorgeous pink cake! The flowers are drooping? Really? Coulda fooled me! Wait! You DID fool me 'coz I don't see any drooping!

You did a great job!!!!

Thanks Deb...you're always SO positive with your comments! I really wasn't fishing, I promise. I do think it turned out well, especially with all the new things I tried and the problems I had. I learned a LOT with this cake. It just showed me how much more practice I would need before I could sell decorated cakes for a profit!

I would just love to know what to do about the greasy paper! I've never had that happen and I sure don't want it to happen again!

I also agree with Debi your cake look great. I love the bear. We are our own worst critics and I don't think we will ever learn to stop It.

Looks pretty good to me!

On your freezer paper, did you have the shiney side out? That may be why the grease is seeping. I don't see it in the picture though.

Good job!

Thanks all.....really! I am very happy with how it turned out. I just need a lot more practice on bows and things and more things and more things. icon_lol.gif

I did put the freezer paper shiny side down, because I always have. Maybe that was the problem, combined with the humidity and 85 degree temps? I would truly like to know what the experts use under their cakes to avoid grease stains!

I know that no one will complain, especially since I only charged the price of the ingredients and it's for my friends. BUT, if this were a paid cake, I'd be really unsure of what to do! The cake is far too heavy to move now. I know it doesn't show much in the picture, but there is a creeping greasy stain all around the cake and paying customers would be upset!

I'm sorry I can't help you with the greasy part of your problem. But my goodness that is a fabulous cake!!! You really did a great job! Anyone would be happy with this cake, not just friends or co-workers. You keep on trying new things, you're obviously a natural.

I always put my shiny side up and usually don't have any problems for 24 hours unless I get icing somewhere else on the board and don't clean it up good.

Your cake looks lovely. Sometime when we are making things that are not turning out just like we want, we don't like them as much. But when you look back at a photo or when the cake is put in different lighting it looks beautiful. Great Job.

I think it looks great! If anything is drooping, I sure can't tell. I love pink so the pinker the better! And besides, it is a nice change from the pastel pink.

Be proud of it! You did a great job!

Your cake is fantastic! Who in the world will notice the paper! Their eyes will be all over the cake while drooling to eat it!! I love all you have done here and the pink is nice with the daisies. You did an excellent job all around! icon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

Darling cake! The booties, daisies--everything--looks great to me! (I'd like to help w/ the paper problem, but the only thing I could think of has already been mentioned--putting the shiny side up might be safer.)

Well what if you lifted up the edge of the cake and well ... ok silly but seriously
do you have a paper puncher any scrap booking items at all? You could take some other paper in pink or matching colors to the cake... cut a lace border on that new paper.... maybe make like a pink lacey border or a coordinating color. If you can just lift the edges of the cake one part at a time.. and slide the colore "lace" under the edges then you might be able to cover the stained part of the freezer paper.. and make a nice artistic touch?
Or well maybe you could make a nice foil rim to slide under the edge of the cake... or well maybe spray the freezer paper with some syrup and then sprinkle colored sugar on it.. making the paper look glitzy and fancy and covering up the stained area...

okay....so....you were all right! icon_biggrin.gif Nobody cared 2 cents about the grease stain (which had spread about 3 inches all the way around the cake by this morning). I had to point it out and they kindof looked at me funny. They just thought the cake was pretty. The mom to be loved it and took the bear and booties home. Best of all, and most importantly, they all loved the way it tasted!

I did love the ideas about sprinkling color sugar or making a lacy border to cover the stains. You guys have great imaginations. So, it was a learning experience and I won't get so worried next time.

Any ideas of how to cover the boards with no grease stains would be appreciated.

Thanks for all your support. thumbs_up.gif
