I am about to make my very first batch of MMF. I did a search of the available recipes and see that some of them recommend a bit of Crisco and some do not. Can someone tell me about the pros and cons of adding crisco?

Thanks!

I dunno who said NOT to use crisco...you HAVE to.....trust me!!!

*Dont use all the powdered sugar it calls for...just add a little at a time.

*Grease all your pans, spatulas, hands, stir sticks, whatever it may be that your going to use....with CRISCO.

*Have fun!!! thumbs_up.gif

The only time I have ever put crico in my recipe is when the fondant seemed to hard and dry. The shortening can make it very soft and pliable. Can be a good thing but I think it also makes it easier to rip. I use the recipe that calls for marshmallow fluff, like it because its so easy and taste good with almond flavor in it. I do use shortening to grease my hands when I knead the fondant, that stuff can be very sticky.

Ok, I'm new here and to the whole cake baking/decorating process. With that said, what is MMF? Thanks!

make sure to have some crisco set aside in an easily accessable dish for your hands...you will need it!!!

i "messed up" and purchased a bag of large marshmallows instead of the miniature mallos and it worked out fine.

good luck, have fun, and be creative!!

I have tried adding a little crisco lately and it gets very very soft. It makes it easier to handle without being sticky. I usually make mine a day ahead because it really needs to sit before you use it. I use my KA, do not grease the mixing bowl, dump a whole 1 lb bag of sugar in it, pour a 1 lb bag of marshmallows with 4-5 Tablespoons of water in a large mixing bowl (not greased) and microwave it for up to 1 min 40 sec. After stirring it I pour it into the sugar and turn the KA on with the dough hook in place and walk away. There is some sugar left in the bottom but most of it gets worked in. This is when I sometimes add the crisco. It just depends on how it looks and feels.

I never worked with MMF, but plan on doing so. I use disposable plastic gloves and was wondering if I grease the gloves instead of my hands, if that will work. Or is it so sticky when working with it, that the gloves will fall off?

I use the disposable gloves with MMF all the time when I am tinting it. I do put a good coat of crisco on them before or they do stick to the MMF.
