How do I make the initial cake topper stand up on the cake. I made this for a friend with wire and faux pearls? She is having her cake made by the resorts baker which is included in her package, but wants me to make the initial for her cake topper. So I made a letter "L" in faux pearls on wire, which turned out pretty. However I have no idea how to get this to stand up on her cake. How do I make it into a pick?

How do people get those fondant/gumpaste initials to stand up on the tops of cakes?

TIA

I had two ideas...they make floral picks that are toothpicks with wire attached to them, you may be able to attach two or three to the letter via the wire and get it to stay up that way. Or the they also make those long staple-like picks that you can push into the cake while they hold the topper up?

What's the size of the L, and the pearls? Is there a way you can make two and space them apart about 1/2" (one in front of another) and then connect them, so that they have a bridges and then they'll stand on their own? Does that make sense? I can picture it in my head, but I'm not sure if I'm explaining it properly.

What about the long wooden skewers you find in the cooking section of the grocery store? Could you some how wire those to the back of the initial? I would think that would be pretty sturdy. You could paint the part that will stick out of the cake to blend in with the initial. Good Luck

Good idea on the floral picks. I didn't think of those. The L is about 7-8 inches tall. I may need to downsize on it. The bride did say she wants flowers on top of the cake so I thought maybe those could help with some stability. I will have to check out Michaels or Joann's.

THANKS

Be careful with the floral pics. Maybe wrap them in foil or plastic wrap before you put them in a cake. They may not be food safe.

Cakesbysandy,
I didn't even see your post when I had replied earlier. We must of been submitting at the same time. I like your idea on the skewers, especially because I already have some of those. The skewers may work better since they are longer and can be cut to any length and are food safe. I have the skewers and some small gauge wire so I will try that.

THANKS

All of those are great ideas...and use the flowers to camouflage anything that might show. I always say a good cake decorator just knows how to hide the flaws well. icon_biggrin.gif
