Okay so my husband's birthday is July 21 and he love's to play the drums. I mentioned to him that I might like to try and make a full replica of his drumset for his birthday cake. Now he is really excited about it and can't wait to see the cake. I don't want to disappoint him. So I need CC help and in a big way. His drum set has 6 drums 1 of those being the big bass drum. It also has 3 or 4 cymbals. I was thinking that 3 of the drums should be dummy cakes and 3 be actual cake(the bass drum should be a dummy cake) I was thinking I could set the cakes on a wooden cake board and support them with PVC pipe painted silver to look like the stands. The symbal I figured could be fondant with gold luster dust. HELP please. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First, I applaud your acceptance of your husband's noisy hobby! My husband and I BOTH play drums, so I understand the enthusiasm. I made our wedding cake, a full drum set. Nothing else would do. I have a pic in my gallery.
My cymbals were fondant. I actually used real cymbals (covered in plastic wrap) to drape the fondant to get the shape weeks ahead of time so they would dry. When dry, I painted with a mix of Old Gold and Super Gold luster dust/vodka, let it dry, then brushed again with dry luster dust to give them that polished, matte finish. All of the 'hardware' is also fondant painted with Nu Silver luser dust.
My drums were not to replica scale, but to give you an idea of sizes, I did a a 16" bass, 12" snare, and 10", 8" and 6" toms, all cake. Our cake generously served 225.
I opted not to set the drums on stands because I was worried about their stability during a 6 hour reception. Instead, I scattered and stacked them on the table, much like drums are stacked for sale display. If you are making a true full sized replica, maybe you can use actual snare drum stands to hold them? Run that idea by your husband. I think the PVC would work to hold them, but no amount of painted PVC would really mirror the true chrome of the actual stands. Depends on how important the 'real' overall effect of the cake is to you.
I hope that provides some help. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Feel free to PM me anytime.
