I am making this really cool wedding cake this weekend for a couple who is really into music. Their entire wedding cake is all musical notes and lyrics to "For My Wedding". It is a three tier Topsy turvy fondant cake. For the topper is where I need help. I need to make Musical notes attached to various lengths of wire and kind of shooting out of the top of the cake in different directions. I am not sure if I should make these using RI, or fondant...or color flow-or what? The notes are to be black. Any suggestions?
I am attaching the diagram I drew up for it. Thanks!

I did my snowflakes on wire out of royal icing. I think color flow would work also. As for fondant no idea. Ive only used it once. Best of Luck!!!

I would use a 50/50 gumpaste, fondant mixture. Much more sturdy then RI and won't dry as fast as straight gumpaste

I have made fondant musical notes attached to wires but I put some tylose on the fondant to make it sturdy. I will try to upload a picture of it now.

I'd go with gumpaste or the 50/50 gumpaste fondant. Looks like a REALLY cool cake!

You could use chocolate candy melts. They are really good and easy to work with. I used these to make the topper on my Baby Shower Cake. Know I purposely made the "BABY" bumpy, but if you copy a mirror image of the notes and then outline with the candy melts, they would be smooth and shiny like the bumble bees on the side of the cake. those are also candy melts. I just outlined the bees and then filled. Kind of the same technique that you would use for color flow. I just love working with candy melts though. Make sure to use Candy Color and chocolate candy melts for black.

Wow, gypsycake!
Your cake is almost exactly what I am looking to do...only have more wires and notes. Did you just shape them by hand, or did you use a template and cut them? Thanks so much! Beautiful cake, by the way!

Gypsycake-I forgot to ask...did you just insert the wire right into the cake? Was it sturdy enough not to fall over?
Thanks again!

I did this cake for a baby shower using wire and RI icing for the decorations. I use 3 lengths of florist wire bend in half and wrapped florist tape over the bent part to keep the wires together. I pushed them into an egg carton to hold them while decorating them when dried pushed them into the cake they held well and didn't tip over.

this is the description that I found in Earlene's website

Tylose: a fine powder you can work into fondant to make a really quick transition to gumpaste. Add 2 -3 tsp of Tylose powder to 1lb of fondant. Dry humidity less Tylose - High humidity more Tylose. Knead it in and let it rest overnight before using.

I did shape my musical notes by hand but I have seen some cookie cutter that could work. The one that I found was too big that is why I had to shape mine. Since, I used double wires, it really heavy and they kept on wanting to some down.

It's an ultra fine modelling paste. Perfect for all sorts of modelling especially plaques, cards and using with Patchwork Cutters as is less stretchy than flower paste. It sets very hard.
