I remember that I had read somewhere on one of the forum subjects (and I cannot find it now) about using real wall spackle as icing for covering dummy cakes. Do I remember that correctly? And if so, how would I use the spackle - straight from the tub, mix it with a little water, etc? Can anyone help?

I use the same BC icing that I do for cakes. It's odd that the icing works great on cakes, but when applied to styrofoams, it gets as hard as concrete. HOlds up well. I just apply the BC directly to the styrofoam.

can you reuse the styrofoam if you've applied hte BC directly on it? i read on a tutorial somewhere (can't remember where) that they covered the dummy with saran wrap so that they could reuse it later. is that necessary?

Yes, you can use them over. I just get a knife under the icing, run it around the dummy and it pops right off. Wipe with a damp rag and it's ready to go. I've read about wrapping it in saran. Maybe that's needed for fondant? I've never used it.

I usually wrap with seran wrap only because it makes the clean up take about 5 mins instead of soaking and cleaning the dummy.

Personnal preference. You can do it with or without the plastic wrap.

I do my dummies in royal icing. I don't wrap the styrofoam first. I just soak them overnight in the bathtub and the icing melts off.

I don't have to soak mine. Run a knife under it and it pops right off. Takes me 5 minutes to clean a dummy.
