What is the best way to do a diagonal stencil on buttercream icing. I want to do a round bottom teir that has a diagonal pattern with dots on the tips of the diagonal points. Is there a stencil for this or do you do it free hand. icon_smile.gif

Do you mean a diamond pattern? If so, there are diamond impression mats for this, and they work wonderful.

oops I called it a stencil mat instead of an impression mat.

Are there any tutorials or directions on how to use an impression mat properly? My impressions just don't seem to turn out very good.

I don't know if there are any tutorials, but they can be used on fondant or a good crusted bc..........I did mine on bc. I sprinkled a tiny bit of powdered sugar on the mat, then dusted the excess off to keep from sticking to the icing, and gently pressed it into the cake, make a handle on the back of the mat with scotch tape or something, so you can pick it up off the cake, then wipe the grease off between each time, so it doesn't get sticky.

If you aren't able to buy an impression mat, just use a ruler. I use the kind with the metal blade. I just push it into my BC or fondant and it works great. Plus, it saved me $30 icon_smile.gif

I use this tool to make a diamond pattern on cakes. It works on buttercream, whipped cream, and fondant. I have never used the diamond impression mat, but that sounds cool, too! icon_smile.gif

I just did a wedding cake with the quilting and i purchased a square cut out set, it has 3 different sizes of individual metal square cutters, it didn't take long to imprint each diamond individually, i used the middle sized square
