Hey there everyone
I have been on here and see several people who have done fondant covered cakes and have had a cris- cross pattern on the fondant (sometimes with pearls at the cross). I hope someone understands what I'm talking about. I was just wondering what the best way is to do that.
Thanks a lot
Ash

Most use an impression mat. You can purchase them from online cake supply stores. I haven't seen any in a store where I live.

thanks fmandds
other than an impression mat is there any other way to do it?
...also, do you make the pattern on the fondant before or after it is on the cake?
thanks

You could try to eyeball it. I thought about doing it once on a round cake but I didn't have anything that could curve with the cake. I'm sure you could do it on square with no problems.

I'd mark the top and bottom of your cake into the portions you'd want. For arguments sake I'm going to use 8ths. Line 1 top would match with line 2 bottom and so forth. This would give you two diamonds. If you wanted more diamonds then Line 1 top would match with line 3 bottom and so forth. That would give you 3 diamonds. I hope this makes sense. Give me a few minutes and I'll attach a diagram.

I hope this helps it make more sense.

I would only do this after the fondant was placed on the cake. I would use the edge of a ruler, or something else flat, to make the indentation. Then at the crosses apply a ball of icing. Good luck!
