This is my first time posting a question and I feel a little silly.......What would cause white spots (perfectly round, small about the size of an eraser tip) on my cake (frosted yesterday, not refrigerated)? It's buttercream with 1/2 butter 1/2 crisco. Thanks for any response.

If I don't sift the confectioner's sugar when making buttercream, when I color it, I sometimes get areas the don't accept the color. I guess it is lumps of confectioners sugar that turn hard in the buttercream. That may be your problem.

I did sift it, but not through a sifter (hand got tired) so I pushed it through a splatter screen. Think maybe there were sugar balls?

That could be it. I usually don't sift (if doing light colored icing) because I hate doing it so I just pull out the non-colored chunks when I see them icon_smile.gif .

Did you use salt in your icing? Sometimes if you use salt and it is not complete disolved it will make white spots in the icing. Something about the salt crystal bursting.

I did use salt because my butter was unsalted....Is there a way to keep it from doing that? I mean, I was fine for the shower, but the next day it had the measles.

Did you use any liquid in your recipe? If so then next time completely dissolve the salt in that and then add it and you should be okay.
