I see a lot of wedding cakes with ribbon around them.. Doesn't the icing soak thru and how do you place it on the cake.... I'm sure its really easy but I'm wondering what everyone does... I have a wedding cake due in a week and thinking about using it,,,

I did a wedding cake this weekend that I added a ribbon to. I had buttercream frosting and was afraid of the same thing happening to me. I had heard on CC that you should put saran wrap on the back of your ribbon. But i didn't have that kind of time. So I just wrapped ribbon around the cake 3 times. It helped some but not totally. I would think that putting saran wrap on the back of the ribbon would be time consuming though.

I've never tried this but if you put a thin strip of fondant around where the ribbon will go first, it seems like that would take care of the frosting issue??

Yes, the oil from the icing soaks thru the ribbon but if you place the ribbon on long enough in advance, the oil soaks into the whole ribbon so it's a "uniform soaking" and the whole ribbon looks normal. Make sense?? Keep in mind that the color of the ribbon will take on a slightly darker color. I enjoy using ribbon on cake's! There's a few in my gallery if you care to check them out.
Best to you!
