Suggestions For Organizing
Decorating By DuncanHinesgirl Updated 29 May 2007 , 12:08am by DuncanHinesgirl
How do you keep your ideas for future cakes organized? I need a system that will work to incorporate magazine clippings, pictures, recipes and books.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am completely organizationally challenged when it comes to my cake stuff.
Thanks in advance.
When I was a newlywed (many years ago) my MIL gave me a 3" binder full of plastic sheet protectors and dividers to collect my newpaper and magazine recipes in. It has worked great.
Maybe you could use something similar and use dividers to organize the types of cakes: wedding, shower, birthday etc.
Good Luck!
Yep, I did the same thing. Then use the tabs to break it down into wedding cakes. birthday cakes, cookies, etc.
Now if someone could find a way to come up with an organizer for all the molds, gadgets and mats! I have them everywhere in my house. I even bought the plastic bins with lids but have outgrown that as well! I guess I could stop buying them....Nah!
I too use binders, with tabs such as Wedding Cakes, recipes, miscellaneous etc. However the majority of my photos are online so I organise my directories by naming the files with stuff I may want to search under, such as 'fondant', and how many tiers. I would love to put everything online - scanning recipes etc, so that it is all searchable. It is so easy to get overwhelmed. I have a billion different versions of recipes all over the place.
Have no organisation for equipment tho, although I detest wasting time searching for stuff!
i do the same with the binder. i also went through all my wilton books, and marked the pages of the ones i really like with a sticky note sticking up sticking up out of the book, and a simple description of what it was. now when i have a client who wants something, and i can vaguely recall a cake that would be perfect but don't remember which book it was in, i don't even have to open the books, i just look through the tabs for the keywords.
I have different binders (wide) with a tab outside that describes what's in it. "Weddings, Birthdays, Bridal Showers, etc) Inside a have those cake photos from magazines etc. inside plastic binders.
I also have it in the computer in folders named Wedding, etc. Regarding equipment I just bought the plastic drawers cabinets and outside a label that describes what's inside those drawers. I'm in the process of moving to my new home. I plan to buy storage cabinets to place in the garage and place all my cake pans, stands, etc.
I use an accordian-type, pull-out folder. It stores nicely underneath my bed. ![]()
Now this is a great thread. I have been pondering on a system to keep things organized. I just purchased a couple of binders to start. Now I know that I am heading in the right direction. Thanks for starting this thread!
i don't really have a lot of stuff picture wise to organize most of mine is online too, but i do have some stuff that i've gotten out of books or magazines. the binder idea sounds great and i constantly get new stuff so the pile is growing. and yeah when someone gets a thread going on how to store your pans, and other baking supplies let me know it's everywhere. but hey i gotta have it.
Thank you all for your input. It seems like the binder system works for many of you. I'll have to give that a try.
Starlataylor, I'll have to borrow that keyword tabbing you use for your decorating books.
Thanks again everyone!
