So I'm doing a cake tomorrow afternoon...and have no idea what this cake will look like. It's a gift for my part-time decorator at work whose last day is Tuesday...but we're taking her out for dinner tomorrow night. I'd like to bring the cake with us to dinner...

This is what I have - 2 6" vanilla layers...one batch (not made yet, I'll make it in the morning) French Buttercream (vanilla flavored, that's what she wants). Medium (kinda cornflower I think) blue batch of MMF. Her favorite color is blue. I was going to cover the cake in the blue MMF, but I think it's a little dark. Toying with the notion of whipping up a batch of white and blending...perhaps some bows...I dunno. I'm not all that experienced with MMF yet, I can cover a round (barely, really)...I CAN make roses, even if the petals are a little thick, but they're passable...I've never made a bow in my life either. I attempted butterflies last night but sucked at them. She'll be surprised that I'm bringing her a cake...so yeah.

Any ideas?? I need something that's not going to be too difficult for me! Oh yeah, I don't have any gum-tex. Or gumpaste either. So anything involving that is out. Don't have color flow either. icon_biggrin.gif Only going with the 6" round.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!

OH...I'd really like to write Good Luck (in Spanish) on it....and I don't have fondant cutters. Like I said, inexperienced! icon_razz.gif

I've never successfully done cornelli. Tried it once and sucked at it! I'm kind of intimidated by it...

I am a rosey girl myself. I like a simple spray of roses with some rosebuds and a message. You could do white roses on top of the blue MMF with a light green leaves. You could always do strips down the sides of the cake or swiss dots. I say keep it simple =) Or even a ribbon around the base for the border.

You could do something simple, elegant, and modern. Smooth BC with a fondant ribbon or bow around the side of the cake would look nice.

I like the ideas for simple, elegant and modern. However, I really want to cover the cake with fondant (I really need the practice as I have a 3 tier fondant cake coming up in Sept...) If I'm rolling out a fondant accent, how thick should it be?

I have always roll out my fondant a bit thick about 1cm (we use cm in Australia) so around 1/2". I would still go with the roses for decoration. Post your results. Good luck!

What if you iced the cake in the vanilla buttercream, and then cut out different circles with the mmf and placed them on the cake I've attached my cake

and this post has some cakes with the similar designs:

and scroll down for the pics. This is really easy to do, you just need different sizes of round cutters (at least two) and then just roll different sizes of pearls with your mmf for the border. Simple yet trendy and elegant.
