Smoothing Cake Tops

i have like the 12 inch spatula and a bench scraper that I use to smooth cakes.. what should I use for the tops.. should I get the BIG OLD 15 inch spatula or a bigger maker like from the hardware store?

i n eed those sugarshack/boween (and anyone else who has straight tops) look LOL

I have the standard spatula. You don't "have" to make one swipe across the top to get it smooth. If that was the case, none of us would ever get an 18" cake smooth. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Have you tried the Melvira Method yet? Since I stumbled onto that one, there is no other way to smooth icing!

I actually havent tried the melvira method yet BUT I have changed to a non crusting buttercream and while I can smooth it it doesnt look level when I bend down and look across it LOL.. Maybe I need a tip on how to ice it evenly on the top LOL instead of a spatula.


BTW- I DO level my cakes and I place the top layer bottoms up
