I just ran out and bought a soccer cake pan, and newbie that I am, can't figure out how to make the cake 3D. Should I have just purchased two sets of the same pan and just stacked one on top of the other?
If so, will I have to use dowel rods and a cake plate to separate the two cakes? One last question (I promise!) How do I get the darned thing to stand up? Do I carve the bottom of the lower layer?
Help! I'll gladly post the results of your great advice!!
Thanks for welcoming me with such open arms. Y'all rock.

I'm guessing you didn't buy the 3D pan just the half pan. You could make two cakes in it and then place one on top of the other. I would probably dowel it that way. The 3D pan is smaller so I didn't dowel mine when I used it. And I didn't need to cut any cake to make it sit, the pressure of the cake on top of the other one did it for me.
Just watch the soccerball half, as I haven't successfully made a perfect sphere with it. I have been told that it is a little smaller than an actual half ball, so you may need to insert a round cake in the middle to get it perfectly round. Mine looked a little squished.
The other cake tin that will do perfect balls is the "sports ball pan" but it is a much smaller ball.
Good luck!
