What kind of coloring are you using? You do have to use quite a bit of coloring and the gel pastes work the best.

Try the americolor super red, it's works great and you don't need as much to get a nice red color.

I don't exactly know what it is called but I call it "ripening"...leave your coloured icing at least over night and the colour wil become truer...
I made red royal icing recently for my Annie Oakley cake and it looked pretty pink...I used a ton of Wilton Red no taste food colouring mixed with a bit of Christmas red as I was feeling a bit desperate too but by the next day, I had very true red..
Use lots of colour though....

Oh, and you can use airbrush colour too for the water content of your RI....I did that for some black but it was very thick...had to add extra water but the colour was great.....

HTH

When I worked in a bakery, I learned this trick. Start with a nice soft brown! We had a light brown choc. icing and if you added red to it, it was beautiful.

Run a forum search - seems like we had this discussion a couple of days ago. Cocoa, Kool-Aid, etc., were among the suggestions, but I don't remember everything off the top of my head.

Americolor is not available locally for me either so I buy it right here from CC. I used only wilton until a few months ago and Americolor is much better, you use less and get a much better color.

JaneK you're right, if you let the red sit for a few hours or even overnight it darkens up very nicely, the same goes for black.
