I took the fondant class at my local Michaels and it was a very informative class. I had a wonderful teacher. However, I have not done anything with dondant since the class...Im just not a big fan of it. It makes beautiful cakes but I don't like to "eat" it. And so far, I have never had anyone ask me for a fondant cake...anyway. I think the class was well worth it. I find that you will always learn something you didn't know.
I am in the third Wilton class now. It is the Fondant class. I have loved all 3 classes so far, and am looking forward to the fondant/gum paste class next month. It has not been necessarily the content of the courses, (I think I probably picked it up from the course book.) but I love all of the little tidbits and tricks that I have picked up from the instructor. The cost has been far more than I expected, but again, would do it again in a minute. (Plus, you just can't beat a little "me" time with cake.)
I personally felt that I didn't learn anything new from the course. I did a lot of exploring with fondant and gumpaste when I was still in the beginning stages of cake decorating, so that probably had something to do with it. If you are new to fondant/gumpaste, then I'm sure you will benefit from the course.
I am currently in the class and I am loving it! It can start to costly but there are ways to cut costs. Always use the coupons in the paper to buy your supplies. If you are friendly with your neighbors and they dont use them see if they will save them for you. The 40 or 50% off really helps. Use it to buy the kit and everything and Michael's almost always has a deal on the classes for Wilton. There are some good flowers and things in the book but if you have a teacher like mine, we do the stuff we know how to at home that way she can teach us more flowers. We have done realistic daisies, carnations, calalillies and other tidbits. i still have two classes left though.
