hi...I want to do a farm theme on my 3yr old's cake and would like ideas on how to make a hay-stack, from ingredients, to food color combinations, to construction...any ideas?

off the top of my head, I would fill and stack a couple of round layers in graduated sizes (not sure how big you want the cake). put in the fridge to chill for at least an hour. then carve the cakes in the general shape of a haystack. crumb coat with a pale yellow buttercream, then chill again for about an hour. use a writing tip to "draw" hay, kind of how you make grass. come to think of it, use the tip you would use for making grass (no idea what number it is - the one with bunches of holes), using a couple of different shades of yellow icing (personally I would just put 2-3 slightly different shades of icing in the bag). The different colors adds some texture and dimension and will help the overall effect.

For extra effect, lean a gumpaste pitchfork against the cake.

hmmm . . .this sounds like fun - it might be something I work on in the fall . . .

please post a photo whatever you decide to do.

I believe the tip is 233. It's used for Hair and Grass. You can make it as long or short as you would want it to be. I have this tip, and I thought (as did the pp) that this tip would probably work well for you. Good luck!

If you needed "mini" haystacks, you could maybe use marshmallows/cookies as the base for this?

I'm not sure, but I think that would work for "little" haystacks!

I saw a picture once where someone used the wondermold or mini wondermold pan for a haystack and then drew the hay onto it as described above.
