For the last few days I've been working on a cake for a cake walk for the school I work for. I kind of went over board with how detailed it would be and how much time to spend on it. But, I thought this would be a great opportunity to try some new techniques.

Ok, so I made 60 white chocolate "cigarrillos", molded some cute farm animal, bake 3 8" cakes, torted them, filled them, iced them... You know, a lot of hours doing this and then I get a call 1 hour and half before the event saying they had decided to cancel it due to bad weather. More than angry I was sad. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif After all that work I had put into it...

Now I have to add the finishing touches for the cake and then decide what I'm going to do with it. I was so looking forward to taking it to the cake walk. I was so proud of it!!

Ohh noooo! Talk about pulling the rug out from underneath you. Hopefully you can find somebody to give it to who will be "wowed" by it!

On the bright side, you got to try some new techniques, got some good practice, and you have another picture for your portfolio. icon_smile.gif

Recently, I asked my bank teller if they'd like me to occasionally dump off practice cakes with them, for the break room. They're always so nice to me! icon_smile.gif Well, the HR lady was there at that moment, and she said that better than that, she'd like my permission to use the better-looking cakes as 'auction' items, to go toward the United Way. I was floored! I never thought to do something like that, but she said that they have an ongoing drive for donations to the UW, and that they'd love to use my cakes toward this, if that was okay.

So check around... you wouldn't believe how many folks will take a practice cake, just because they like cake. My family and friends are pretty much caked-out right now -grin- but I started looking further out, and best of all, this will hopefully be advance advertisement, for when I'm ready to seriously look at starting a cake business. icon_smile.gif (Hmmm... think the bank will be more inclined to give me a loan, once they've tasted and seen the yummy goodness of my cakes? -grin-)

How about taking it to the local firestation? They work 48 hour shifts and miss out on the home cooked meals. I am sure they would love it!

awww that is such a good idea! I read on here the other day that someone took a cake to a woman's shelter! That would brighten anyone's day!!

You could also try to donate to a class or daycare center, a nursing home or hospital, and speaking from experience a beauty shop. My mother owns a shop here in my hometown and I'm always taking cake and putting it in her break room and then she offers it to customers. All really good exposure! Think, somewhere with lots of employees or customers to see and taste.

FYI, fire stations (unless you know the personnel) might take and then dump the cake because of safety concerns.

Also, in IL (at least when my youngest was still in school), pre-schools and schools only allowed pre-packaged (purchased) baked goods because of safety concerns.

That being said, I trust all you guys. I'll happily accept all cake donations and I promise to be damn grateful. (So please feel free to p.m. me for my address.)

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif That's funny.

All those are good ideas. I do remember taking one of mine once to a food bank but it had to be boxed as if it came from a bakery and mine is too tall for that.

I'm still putting on the final touches. I thought that given the forced "extra time" I was given, I would add a few extra details.

I'll post a picture when finished and thanks for the great ideas.

I don't know. My cousin was married to a fireman and man they loved getting that stuff from people. That was a while back though, so maybe in midst of all the safety concerns it wouldn't work as well. Maybe if you went and they met you it would be o.k. The schools could be particular though. They are here.

I like the hair salon idea. Good exposure!

These are all awesome ideas, so far most of the cakes I've gotten to make have been for something, I've had one that didn't have a home and went to work with my husband so they aren't caked out just yet but when they are (because I totally in tend to keep practicing) these are great ideas.
