I've seen lots of cakes recently on CC that have fondant and/or gum paste accents (usually on the top tier) "springing" up on some sort of wires. They are precious! What is it, and where can they be purchased?

I found mine in the floral section at Walmart.. they come in a pack of 18 sticks and I just bent them all around and put beads and fondant flowers on them.. .check out the whimsy in my gallery to see if that is what you are talking about icon_smile.gif HTH

The most common answer I've seen is a 22-gauge wire. It comes on spools too which may make it more likely to bend & curl the way you want it to for your design.
I'd love to see the finished product!

On my cakes, I just use wire from a local craft store...a pretty thin guage, but I have only put paper items on mine, not heavy thing like fondant or gumpaste. My friend taught me a GREAT tip about that too. Wire usually comes on a spool and doesn't want to straighten well, so unroll some and run a pen or pencil along it...it straightens out perfectly!

Thank you all so much for your replies! I'm glad it was such a simple answer - I actually already have floral wire at home ... yeah! If you make a shape using gum paste, do you just insert the wire into the gum paste before it dries?

SugarBakerz,

That's exactly what I'm talking about - thanks so much!

how do you attatch the wires? Do you run them all the way down the cake or just the tier they are springing from?

Also do you support them with anything to keep the wires from tearing the fondant? or is that even an issue?

Would love to know, I am dying to try this out on my next cake.

Thanks
Sherri
