It's good to be back on CC.
How do you get the icing around the character cakes to be perfectly smooth?

Can I use the viva papertowels too to try smoothing it out or is there another technique?

Should I start to smoothe the icing before it crust or after it crust?
Thankyou in advance . diamondsmom

I read on another post not long ago that using the large icing tip works really well for getting the sides smooth on them. I can't wait to try it on my next one, I have the tip but didn't have a large enough bag for it still icon_lol.gif I have a guitar to do for this coming Saturday using the guitar pan so I'll be trying it for this one finally! Hopefully it helps make it easier thumbs_up.gif

If you are going to use the papertowel method, wait until it crusts....about 20 minutes or so.

I've used a butterknife dipped in warm water. Works really well. In fact since I learnt that method (from this site I might add) I don't use any other method. icon_smile.gif

The icer tip is a great big flat tip that you just drop in a big bag without a coupler. It makes it easier to cover the cake, and is probably about the right size for the sides of the character pans! Good Luck!

I tried to use the icer tip once and the icing didn't stick to the cake. Do you need to crumb coat first?

your frosting might be to thick. Or the cake to warm for it to "stick". Those are the only two things that come to mind for me. I've never done a crumb coating and I've only had trouble with it not sticking when I had a thicker consistency of frosting.

Did you make sure that the comb side of the icing tip was touching the cake when you let out the icing. I am thinking that might be the problem if you don't actually touch the cake with the tip the icing will not adhere. Give it another try!

When I make character cakes, I use my spatula to put the icing on, and get it mostly smooth, and then after it crusts, I use the Viva to finish smoothing it. I like the results much better than the hot knife method.

I just got my guitar cake finished a little bit ago, finally got to try the icing tip for the sides of it. I'll NEVER use my spatula again to do the sides of a character cake, probably never on any shaped cake again!!! It worked wonderful thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif . I was VERY happy with it. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
