Hello,

My nephew is having his 4th birthday on the 15th July 2006, and he picked up my Debbie Brown Character book and had one look at the Thomas cake and asked me to make the same for him. To say the least I am a little daunted by the task that lays ahead and as I would really like to make this cake for him I am wondering who on the site has attempted the same and if so if they could advise me how hard a task it actually is and what you would rate the same on a scale of 1-10 with respect to its difficulty.

Also if anyone has posted a photo of their thomas cake I would be interested in having a look at it.

Thanks

Anna

I've done a Thomas cake that's in my pics. I've never seen the Debbie Brown book before, but I've heard it is great. Good luck.

That cake had me in tears...but I'm willing to try it again in a month so I guess it didn't break me that bad. But, I am my own worst critic. I tried to take some shortcuts that really didn't help. Next time, I don't think it will be nearly as hard.

The biggest problem I had was that I underestimated how much cake I needed and ended up using an 8" round cake cut up to fill in spaces. That made it difficult to stay together. It was also my first time using the enhanced formula cake - that I burned the edges on. I've gotten a lot better since then though.

Looking at your cakes, I think you can handle it!

Thank you so much, I will give it a try and keep in mind the amount of cake needed. I know what you mean about being too hard on ourselves.
Thank you soooooo much

there are lots of thomas cakes in the gallery. Just type in thomas in the search area and you will find lots of examples. I am sure that you can pm any of the makers and they will tell you what they did.

Hi! I don't know if I can help or not, but I made a Thomas cake in May for my son. It was smaller and used mini loaf pans to get the train and cars. You can see it in my pics. I made it small to help save time and materials. It was actually quite easy. Let me know if you would like me to tell you more.

I did a thomas cake for my son's second bday and he suddenly wants him again. The first time, I was straight out of course one, so needless to say, not the best cake in the world. I'd be interested to see the Debby Brown version. I have a mental image in my head of what I'll create, but it never comes out exactly the same when I'm done icon_smile.gif

My Thomas cake is on my sites... listed below. I can send you instructions, but don't have a lot of photos of the process. I should have taken more than I did.
I'd say on the difficulty scale from 1-10 I'd give it a 7, but on the time consumption scale a 9. It took awhile.
Let me know if you want the instructions... PM your email to me and I'll send it to you. I've posted it before, but not sure where. Might be easier just to forward an email I already have in my file. icon_wink.gif

Good Luck!

I just used the regular 3D train pan again for Thomas. I think it turned out a lot better than the first one (but then, I have 3 more years of experience than I did back then too).
