There are SOOO many books on how to decorate out there. I was wondering if anyone had some favorites - ones with step by step directions. I'm fairly new (taken the 3 Wilton classes, watch a lot of Food Network) and I've been looking through so many books, but I'm not sure where to start! Anyone have any recommendations?

I love all the Wilton books, anything they print...... but by now, I pretty much have it all, except when something new comes out.

I also love Colette's books, she's my hero(ine). I got a look at that Whimsical Cake book, it's cute. I also saw one called Celebrate With Cake that was awesome, too bad I didn't have the money to buy it. I recently got a bargain on a Sylvia Weinstock book on e-bay, just waiting for it to be delivered.

You are so right. There are tons of books out there and I have a bunch on my shelf but the one that I find myself reaching for everytime for ideas and inspirations is "The Essential Cake Decorating Guide" from Thunderbay Press. That book and this website give me plenty of ideas.

The ones I am currently studying are the 3 Wilton Encyclopedias of Cake Decorating. They are out of print now, but there are techniques in these that I have never even seen done on cakes! I am really enjoying them. I got my set off of ebay. Well worth the money, IMO.

Go to a bookstore and look to see which ones you like, and then go home and search ebay and amazon for them - you can get them a lot cheaper on there.

I love the Collete books too, but I think she's too advanced for my skill level right now. Here's a link to another one I have that has a wide variety of skill levels, so I've used it more often. icon_smile.gif

My greatest bargain was while I was on vacation in Washington DC. I went to a Barnes and Noble ( have to go to every bookstore I pass) and found Toba Garrett's book "The Well Decorated Cake". I paid 2.95. She explains the technique and also explain the different types of coverings for the cake. She goes through sugarpaste, marzipan, fondant, buttercream, chocolate molding and so on.

Yikes! sorry about that. It's called "Cakes & Cake Decorating" and it's by Angela Nilsen, Sarah Maxwell, and Janice Murfitt.
