How Do I Smooth The Sides Of A Character Cake?

help needed on smoothing character cakes. like the sides and top where the stars wouldn't be outlining. can the viva paper towels be used to smooth character cakes too? thanks much. diamondsmom. it's good to back on CC.

yeah, you could do that. I'd probably just do all of the parts you want smoothed first, then proceed to your outlining and stars etc.

I use my icer tip to ice the sides first, let it crust, then smooth with a hot spatula before moving on to filling in with stars. That icer tip is my best friend thumbs_up.gif (in the cake decorating world anyway). It seems to be the exact width as the character cake is tall.<------------------That sentence doesn't make any sense but I couldn't figure out another way to describe it.

I use the icer tip to ice the sides too... I don't go back and smooth it with a spatula or anything. I think it looks good the way it is.
