My sister asked me to do a birthday cake for her 21yr old Grandaughter. They live in another state and are planning on visiting here soon. The date is not certain because of multiple health problems the Grandaughter has been having the past couple of years. (Multiple hospitalizations and operations) She has been so sick. Anyway, she loves her cat so I would like to make her a cat cake. (Oh yes, her last cat was hit by a car last year. A neighbor informed her while she was very ill in the hospital...That really helped. It wasn't like she was depressed enough! Her mom got her a new kitten.) I've seen some wonderful cat cakes on CC. Has anyone done a cat using the 3D bear pan? Any other ideas? It can't be too complicated because I'm still new to cake decorating! Thanks for any help!!! I just want something special for my great niece. She's had a really tough time these past 2 years and deserves something special!

Have you found a picture you like? You could pm the member for some directions. I personally havent done a cat cake. Think this is a cute cake by frostingswithflair (from her site) Not 3D though

merissa, Thanks!! I have seen this cake in the gallery and thought about attempting it! I haven't seen a picture of a cat out of the 3D bear pan but have seen where other animals (frog) have been made with it. Just thought someone might have done a cat using it.

hmm I was thinking you could go to a cake decorating store and rent a cake pan, I seen one but I think it was retired.
I was thinking you could either use the old cake she had that passed or the new kitten or even incorporate both into a cake. Get the colors or the cats and design it around them.

I wish you the best of luck with your cat cake icon_smile.gif

Just a thought ~ you can take it or leave it. I read somewhere to to really think twice about making 3D cakes look like people's beloved pets. The end goal is to slice them up and eat them since they are just cake. You may not get the result of happiness you were hoping for. Me, personally, I think it is a really cute idea, and see no problems since the girl is a little older. I just thought that I'd pass that along.

I agree with Daryn that slicing off the head, etc. of a beloved replica of a pet and then eating it is a little creepy to say the least. But if everyone just realizes that it's only a delicious cake--NOT the pet, then I'm sure it would be a very appreciated design.
That said, I've made a few animal cakes for clients who got a huge kick out of them---as Chef Duff does all the time. And, I've made a few cats using the Wilton lamb cake mold. It is a sitting lamb and I modified the bare cake by carving off the ears and making fondant cat ears.

I had the same thought about an animal cake. Some of the ones in the CC gallery are rather life-like and I would have a hard time cutting them!! Since my skills aren't at an advanced level.....I think I would be pretty safe in not making it too realistic!!!!

How about using the sports ball pan to make the cake into a yarn ball like the debbie brown cake, and then make some little kitty models out of fondant. I don't know if there are kitty instructions in the template gallery, but I know there are instructions for making apuppy, which could pretty easily be shaped into a kitty. With the kitty models not being the actual cake, you wouldn't have to worry about cutting into them, and your grandaughter would have a wonderful keepsake that she could put into a shadow box.

I don't know how you feel about including non-edible things on your cakes, but...

Last year, I made my son a "lucky cat" (maneki neko) cake for his birthday. I bought a six-inch tall lucky cat bank on ebay. It was white, with red, black, yellow, green, and gold accents. The cake was two- tiered, iced white with red flowers (I attempted cherry blossom-style flowers [though red with gold dragees in the middle]). I can't remember the border (color or style) that I used, but I know the theme was inspired by some Asian-styled cakes I've seen online. I put the bank on top (set on a piece of cake board that I cut to fit). I wanted to do a message in Japanese (with chocolate transfer), but I was afraid that one wrong move would turn "Happy Birthday" into something ridiculous. Anyway, he loved it- and of course, he still has his lucky cat bank.

I've seen some super cute lucky cats that would work so well on a girl's cake. I'm not good with fondant and figures, so I've had to rely on toys and bits on many of my kids cakes over the years- though I think edible decorations are the ideal. Good luck with whatever direction your cake takes you!

BTW- a "Hello!" to everyone. This is my first post, and I love this site and these forums!

I think the Cat on the Yarn ball would be so cute. And she could take the little kitten off and you would just be eating the ball of yarn. Plus since your new to cake decorating, that would shoudn't be too hard to do. Good luck and I wish you the best on it.

I just looked at the Frostingwithflair website listed above and am in awe. Are those chocolate transfers the she does? I have yet to try a chocolate transfer.

I'd love to be able to make a cake like those on there.
