For my neice's 1st birthday, I want to make a 2-tiered cake with the baby einstain catepillar "crawling" up the cake. I'm going to make the catepillar out of the mini ball pan. Would icing be enough to keep the catepillar on the cake? Do you think I'll need to use a dowel or something to keep the catepillar from falling?

For a more stable cake, I would use plastic drinking straws to attach the catepillar to the cake. Then just ice over the straw indentations. I've worked with 3D cakes and straws usually do the trick. Good luck and make sure to post a picture!
