This is a design that I thought up, and I guess should have had more support in it. There is a board in the middle of the cradle with dowels underneath. I was planning on a center dowel, but forgot!
Anyway, while I was driving the top half started to slide. I had to stop a few times and try to push it back into place. Luckily I could do that with fondant. By the time I got to the shower the fondant had big ripples in it and the shape wasn't as perfect, but at least most of the ripples were only on one side. Thank goodness the whole thing didn't fall apart!!! The top cake did have a small crack in it which could have been part of the problem, but there wasn't any cracks in the fondant on the top. I used contact paper to cover the board in the middle and it seemed like it was sliding on it even with some BC glue. Do you think the central dowel would have made all the difference? My dino cake was taller than this and there was no boards in it at all but it had a central dowel! I was scared to chill it b/c I was worried about the fondant melting off when it came back to temp, and it was 85 degrees out that day.
Anyway, here's the pic: 4 layers of cake covered in fondant.

My 6 year old daughter loves this cake and I must say I do too. Great job!!!
I think the cake is ADORABLE!!!! GREAT JOB!! I do think the central dowel would have been good support....it would have also held the cake board in place. I figured this out with the graduation cake I did. If I didn't use it the whole top part of the cake would have been gone.
It's so scary to drive some of these cakes around....LOL. ![]()
I had a disaster this weekend also - I was making the cake for my daughter's first birthday and I was almost finished. Well, I went to turn it around to do the other side and the cake board caught on something and the cake fell off the board and onto the floor. I screamed and cried and started over!
Your cake looks amazing - I would love to know how to do it!
Courtney...your cake is adorable!! Great job!! ![]()

Well, I can post directions, but obviously the support system needs some fixing. I think it would have been ok with a couple central dowels. Sorry it took me so long. I was recovering from this past weekend!
I stacked up two layers, put in dowels and then put a board on top. Then added two more layers. I sculpted the cake to give it that cradle shape, so it was more narrow on the bottom. Then I covered the sides of the cake. I used four separate pieces then I added strips to hide the seams. I also made fondant cradle rails/rockers and then added a strip of frill to hide the gap. I added a rectangle of fondant to the top and a fondant pillow. I had wanted to make the pillow 3D but it was getting late. The baby's head is the half ball pan, covered in fondant. There is no board under it. I just set it on the top, and also used a half ball for the belly. I modelled the two hands and feet. Added fondant blanket that I rolled out and embossed with a teddy bear textured rolling pin, and then cut the edges with a frill cutter.
I think that's pretty much it. Ask if you have any ?'s for me!
