I was just wondering how many of you have your customers return cake drums & dowels. I noticed that a member here mentioned this & I've just been having my customers throw them out (fondant covered drums).

Just wondering.

I just build the cost of those items into the cost of the cake. I've found it's pretty difficult to get people to return stuff, so I'd rather not mess with deposits and all on inexpensive items like that.

I work in a bakery where we do alot of wedding cakes. We don't have people return the dowels (we just use the wooden kind) or the drum boards. Like the other person said we just bill for them or basically figure it as a general cost. They aren't really washable so we wouldn't want to use them on someone elses cake because we don't know what could've happened to them while they were out. We do have our customers return our acrylic boards, pillars, cake stands ect. anything that is expensive and or washable (re-useable) and we just charge a deposit. If they return them in good condition within 24 hours they get their whole deposit back. If they don't return them, then we charge them.

I use Bakery crafts SPS and cake drums and don't want them back, I don't have a store front and dealing with the hassel is just not worth it, plus cake drums are cardboard and not really re-usable.
