I was just finishing up my wedding cake for this weekend. It's a 16 in round, a 13 in round, a 10 in round and a 7 in round. No problems until I placed the 13 on top of the 16. Then when I'm wrapping the ribbon around the bottom of the 13 in tier I find a hole in my buttercream and a little sunk in area. You could barely tell it was sunk in, but it was there. I injected some frosting in there and smoothed it out, disguised the area with some scrollwork.

Am I in trouble?? I still have to transport this huge monster to Hamilton tomorrow. I'm not going to stack the whole thing, just the 2 biggest, until I arrive. I don't know whether the roads are bad or not.....

Kinda worried here, am I going to lose this whole cake?? I checked the bottom tier all around, but didn't find any other evidence of cracking. Someone please send some good mojo my way!! icon_cry.gif

I hope everything goes okay for you. I have to do the same thing in a couple of weeks, and several people on here have told me to put a central dowel down the center. Maybe that will help you with travel. To put the other 2 tiers on when you get there, you may have to put a center hole in the cake board of each tier to easily place on.

Just an idea...

Hope all goes well...

Yep, have a center dowel through the big 2 tiers. I probably won't need one on site, though. I'm using stress free cake supports.

I'm just worried about the fissure extending during travel. Can you imagine the nasty surprise of finding your bottom tier in pieces when you go to take it out of the box?

Good luck with the transport! Will you be able to take a helper with you?

I've had a small sink or crack before, but not with a large cake like that. I think you'll be OK- but I'll be sending lots of good thoughts your way!

Ok, so I delivered it ok, then when I was putting on the final ribbon, I noticed another crack like the first about 7 inches away from the first one. I just pushed it back together and re-piped the broken scroll.

It's about 4 1/2 hours after the reception started, so I'm assuming everything is ok since I haven't received a panicky phone call from the bride.....right???

Do I need this stress?

Note in the pic that I managed to get fingerprints on the topper.... icon_mad.gif
