My cousin in law just bought her first home. Shes a special ed teacher, so this took a lot of saving and is a very big deal. She also LOVES frogs, so I was thinking of making a cake with a bct of a frog sitting on a lily pad and then writing "Congrats on your new pad!" The problem is I need some help putting it together. Like should I color the icing I ice the whole cake with blue? What kind of border should I use? Should I print out the words in a comic book type bubble thing and also make that a transfer, or just pipe the message directly on the cake? Also how can I do a transfer and not have to put a border around it? Is that possible? Please help me I really want this cake to be special.

Here is a pic of a frog I found. You see that it has little lily pads with the flowers on them in the backround. Should I make thoes as a bct too? Hahaha I need help icon_cry.gif

this is just me but i dont think you would need a border around this. It is meant to look like its on water right??? So make you the cake blue as you suggested and then make you bct do the small pads as their own bct it would look more realistic if you ask me. Maybe you could add some blue edible glitter or some luster dust to the blue to make it seem more like water. I think the comic book writing would be really cute.

I would ice the cake white, do a BCT of the frog and then lay down some colored piping gel for the water. Iwould also put a borde just to keep the piping gel in place. Also, put some luster on the frog to make him look sparkly.

To do a BCT without having to have a border around it, try these instructions.

Here are some other ways to transfer designs onto cakes.

I AGREE WITH SUSAN - THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT!

I like Susan's idea of making the buttercream blue and dusting it with maybe sparkle dust (very shimmery and gives it a dew-like shine). Maybe a green fondant lily pad and a frog figure piped on top?

You could paint one side of you bag with yellow coloring and then fill it with green icing. That would give your frog yellow and green coloring.

If you want to do that picture, I would make the top of the cake the same color as the water in the BCT so that you don't have to do a border.

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone! Lisa the links you posted were very helpfull! Ok this is how Im going to do it. The frog will be on "water" , I have seen cakes done with luster dust and I do like the look of it but I have never used it. I think I will get some this weekend and do a practice cake. I wont put a border around the bcts. I will do the water lilys with teh flowers as seperate transfers. Im thinking blue shell border for the top and bottom of the cake. I do like the idea of the bag striping but I have never done that before either. Im self taught so I try not to get too fancy. icon_redface.gif

Should I use two different shades of green for the frog and lilly pads? Also should I make the spots on the frog brown or yellow?

Thanks again for all the help! You guys are great, I love this forum!

I think it would be a good idea to do two different shades of green so the frog and lily pad don't run together. Maybe lighter for the lily pads. I like yellow spots for the frog or maybe the lighter green if you use that for the lily pads. It'd be one less color to mix at least.

Great frog! Perfect BCT and so large! Doesn't even look like a BCT...that's a compliment thumbs_up.gif I like the color blue you used too. It really makes the frog stand out.

Oh thank you! Your too kind! Some of the outlining came off but I just piped it on the frog waited till it crusted a little and flanted it to match the rest. Its only my second BCT so it looks kind of "wormy" in places.

Also the cake is a white Pillsbury mix. I used milk in place of the water and added 1 1/2 cups of Fruity Pebbles cereal! The kids LOVED it! It was kinda like the confetti cake mix you can buy. icon_smile.gif

The blue is Wiltons Royal blue.

I've never thought of doing that...adding fruity pebbles or any kind of cereal for that matter. I think it's a great idea! Did the fruity pebbles keep their color and shape? You know that confetti cake mix never looks like it does on the box. I'd love an alternative.

They were grate! I was scared they would be soggy or shrivel up. They were cakey and a little crunchy at the same time, if that makes sense.
You could even taste the different flavors. The colors stayed bright, even yellow! I will see if I can get a pic for you.

Really good job, your boys are lucky to get to be the taste testers! The cereal idea sounds really good. I like the confetti cake too, but you are right it doesn't look like it does on the box.

We are lucky too, we get to learn from your practice! Janice

One more thing I liked about the using cereal is that the peices were light and didnt sink to the bottom while baking.

And thanks again for all the encourgement! icon_biggrin.gif
