if Muslims eat butter? I know they don't eat animal derived fat (lard etc), but does that include butter? I know a lot Muslims drink milk, so as butter is made from the cream of milk, is there a difference?! Reason I ask is because my daughter's pre-school classmates are nearly all Muslim and I want to send a cake/cookies in on Friday when she leaves to go on to kindergarten - so I need to know whether I can use butter in my recipes or not! Thanks for any help you can give me ![]()
Not to worry! Just did a search on the web and found that all fats, except the following are permitted: lard, dripping suet, all other animal fats (EXCEPT butter), and anything that is cooked in these fats. They also forbid alcohol and gelatine (so MMF and most fondants are out - check the ingredient label). Thought this info might help someone else if they get asked to do a cake for a Muslim recipient! If you use cake mixes, you'd have to check the label to see what's in it, but if you're a scratch baker (like me), all the things you'd normally put in a cake are fine (flour, eggs, sugar, butter etc).
Edited to say: any flavourings/extracts with an alcohol base are NOT permitted either - so it's off to the store to get a vanilla pod for me
