I'm making a birthday cake for a coworker's little boy for Sunday. I want to do a 2 tier (10 & 6 in.) with this Elmo popping out of the top, with fondant or gumpaste stars on wires all around him. Would it be better to make Elmo out of gumpaste or fondant? Also, how would I get him to look texturized or furry instead of just smooth? Any tips on modeling Elmo would be much, much, much appreciated!!! Thanks!

I would use all fondant for elmo!! allows you the time to work on him, just do him a few days in advance so he is dry enough for the finished product.

For something that large you will need strength and a faster drying time. I would mix fondant and gumpaste half and half. That way you get the smoothness of the fondant so the skin surface doesn't wrinkle, and the strength and faster drying time of the gumpaste. I would also use a dowel up the center of the body for support.

The ideal way to make him would be molded of Rice Krispie treats with a dowel in the center and the figure covered in fondant. It would be much lighter in weight and you would get a bumpy texture under the fondant, so texturing would only take a short amount of time to complete. For the body texture you could use a clay gun or extruder and fondant for the fuzzy hair, or you can just texture after you have applied solid pieces of paste, either with the end of a grass piping tip, or the tines of a fork. You may want to clip just the outer surface with small scissors, not all the way through the paste, then curl back the points a bit.
