A 37-year old friend of ours just found out he has a 19-year-old son from a teenage encounter, and then the 19-year-old son, who is in the army, just found out that his girlfriend is pregnant. So our buddy is grappling with being a dad and grandfather in a very short time period. They are having a big party to welcome the new-found son into the family on Memorial Day weekend, and I want to make a cake that would fit the occasion. The only idea I have so far is to do a large heart-shaped cake in camouflage (to represent the military part of it) with a baby in a bassinette on the top and writing that says "Welcome to the Family!" Any other ideas out there? I don't think he's too thrilled about the grandpa part, so I'm kind of afraid to mention it on the cake, but the baby will kind of symbolize that anyway. Plus, is it bad luck to have a baby-themed cake for someone that just found out they're pregnant?

This is a very interesting situation. I like the camo heart cake idea.

how about something fun and festive-maybe with stars on wires like fireworks and the words "new Beginings " incorporated somehow

Isn't it amazing? Perfect example how one's life can change in the blink of an eye...

I wouldn't include the pregnancy on this cake...wait for the baby shower for that one...(and maybe a little one to ease gramps into the new role)

Yeah, I think you're right about the pregnancy thing. Just safer not to mention it. I did a baby in a basinette cake topper out of a sugar egg covered with fondant for another baby shower that didn't happen, so I'm eager to use it since it's already done. With it being on top of the camo cake, I think it will just symbolize the son, not the unborn grandchild. I like the idea of stars on wires shooting out like fireworks and new beginnings, too.

How about just go with the whole Memorial Day thing - red, white, and blue; maybe some stars. Just something fun.
