I don't think I have seen this mentioned anywhere, sorry if I am repeating it though.

After making my first bow and having a hard time making sure all of the pieces were the same width and length I went on a hunt for something to make it easier. I know wilton has the roller out there but i haven't heard the perfect reviews for it. So of course off to the craft departments!

At walmart I found a Shape Cut Sloted Ruler Mat. Marketed for fabrics, but it has a slot every 1/2" and markings every half inch so i could actually make 1/2"x1/2" squares =) Well i rolled out my gumpaste and laid this over and took my Rotary cutter (also marketed for fabrics) It worked beautifully! I have a lot more ideas for these two tools.

The Rotary cutter is Fiskars and I have used there scissors for decorating in past bakeries I worked in and they have great products!

Here are links to pictures of the two Items I am talking about. I found both of them in the wal-mart craft department.

Shape Cut Mat (you will need to scroll down about 3/4 of the way) - http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.elegantstitches.com/Quilts/ShapeCut.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.elegantstitches.com/QuiltingSupplies.htm&h=241&w=350&sz=24&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=XcECA2fW7zrULM:&tbnh=83&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dshape%2Bcut%2Bslotted%2Bruler%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den

Rotary Cutter - http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.dick-blick.com/items/574/27/57427-1045-3ww-l.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.dickblick.com/zz574/27/&h=276&w=600&sz=26&hl=en&start=17&um=1&tbnid=LwxmegJVmobSpM:&tbnh=62&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfiskars%2Brotary%2Bcutter%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den

Hope this helps someone else b/c I was having a hard time finding a good cutter for bows.

That's a neat idea. Cakes by Sam also sells a fondant strip cutter that comes with different sized spacers to make different width ribbon. You can cut four strips at once.

I am too, Tiffy, it makes bow-making so much easier! BTW - I recall it was reasonable - maybe $10 or $15?

Is the one on Cakes By Sam a metal one? I was searching for one and knew I had heard about it on CC but I couldn't find it when I really needed it.

And darnit, I already placed an order from there this week! Guess i'll have to wait until next time to order it.

I just made my first bow in class on wednesday. I used a thick ruler i had, it's plastic. The only thing is that it left 2 lines in the mid of the bow. I thought it looked fine. I used a pizza cutter to cut, made it much easier for me.

oooh that's a nice tool at cakesbysame! wow.

Thank you for the tips. I have that rotarary cutter and use it for EVERYTHING (except I haven't tried it on food!) I've cut cake boards, fabric, disposable decorating bags, ribbon, paper, dowels...anything I could think of. I love mine!! Now I just need one of those mats... icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for sharing. I am going to look for that mat.
I bought the multi-ribbon cutter from Beryl's. It works very well even tho' it is plastic.
