I would like to make a flag out of fondant (a Canadian one), and drap it across a cake....how does everyone get the red and the white (and the blue for all those beautiful American flags I keep seeing), to meld together so nicely? Do you make a white flag and then add the different colors of fondant on top? Or are you painting on the colors?...I just don't get it! I need help PLEASE!!! ![]()
That's how I made mine....one piece of white, then laid strips of red. Then VERY lightly roll over the stripes to "set" them into place. I wet the backs of the strips first with clear vanilla (or use water) to glue them into place. You just can't put much pressure at all when rolling or your shapes distort. Painting would work too but the look would be different I think. Not as "solid and sharp" . Give it a try!!
Good luck to you!

I used rolled buttercream to make the Italian flag .... it is just three logs of color and I covered it in wax paper and used a rolling pin to bind them together. Then I used a pizza cutter to cut out the flag. However I didn't have to put a design it the middle like the maple leaf you will have to do. If I were doing the Canadian flag, I'd do the same technique and I'd also rollout a piece of red, flat, then cut out the maple leaf with a paring knife and just lay it on top.
Thought I'd share it anyhow because I find rolled buttercream easier to work with than fondant.
I can't attach the picture because it tells me it's over 800 pixels or something like that. If you want to see the picture, here's a link:

Most of the American flags you see are airbrushed.
