sarb21 - where did you take your classes?? If it was at Michaels - you need to contact Wilton or the manager of that store....that is NOT how the pricing is at Michaels.
Yes I am taking them at Michaels. So your saying I should have only had to pay th one time fee of $12.50 for all of course 1 classes? Instead of the 12.50 for each class? I have class tomorrow night so I will defiantly ask then!! Thanks for information!!!
I had to pay for each class. They had half off so the price was only $12.50, but I had to pay that 4 times. So the cost of the class was $50.00.
Wow, where in the world did you take your classes? I have taken all of the Wilton classes, and they are $25.00 for four two-hour classes. I have gotten a couple of beginner teachers, so I repeated the courses they taught, and never paid more than $25.00 for all four classes in each course.
I called at lunchtime today at work and talked to a couple of people at Michael's. I could tell the first person that I talked to didn't know much about it, b/c she was reading stuff off of a paper that talked about it. I called back b/c I had a couple more questions and the second lady was pretty knowledgeable. They said I had to go in in person and sign up and that the kit was a penny for the month of July. I am thinking I will go on Saturday to sign up. I think the only downside of this is that there is not another closer place that offers the classes around me. The closest one is 40 to 45 miles away.
Hi,, just joining in cause I too am interested in taking the classes,, I'm from around the Jackson, MS area, I had contacted Michaels and was also told that it would be a $25 registration fee for each class. I'm more interested now that it sounds like you should only have to pay that one time. I'll definitely call the store back and find out. Thanks
Just to clarify. There is a Course I, a Course II, and a Course III. Each COURSE is $25.00 or less, depending on specials. Each course consists of four classes of two hours each. So if you take Course I, then Course II, then Course III, you will invest twelve weeks, and $75.00 total, not counting any specials they may run. There will also be some equipment costs, like the Course kits, which run $20-$25, again without specials, and everybody usually gets a little turntable, and few other things. Your extra supplies could run you just as much as you want to spend, but the only things you NEED! are the Course tuition, again, $25.00 or less PER COURSE! and the Course kit/s.

The cashiers really don't know much about the classes. Some do ask the instructor questions so they can answer them better, but then others don't bother. If you have any more questions, I'd ask for the instructors number and call him/her personally. You will get better, and more exact answers that away.

Yeah, that is kind of what I figured too. Everyone I talked to was very kind and extremely helpful. The first lady I spoke with was very helpful and offered the advice to sign up as soon as I could because the classes fill up very quickly. Sometimes when you call someplace and ask questions they don't seem like they care if they help you or not.
Can I ask one more question? I feel kind of bad because I didn't mean to hijack the OP's thread. (sorry OP) What do the course kits contain out of curiosity? Do you get tutorial books? If so, anything else?
Thanks
The class kits contain the basics you need to complete the course you are taking. Tips, the practice board, a spatula, the basic materials. If you want to know exactly what is in each kit, they are often sold on e-bay, and all contents are listed.
You get a Course book, which details each lesson in the first class.

Course 1 Kit (and please remember this is off the top of my head...)
- Practice board with stand
- 2 featherweight bags
- 1 plastic disposable bag
- 2 couplers
- 7 tips - 3, 12, 16, 21, 67, 104 and 2d
- 1 spatula
- 1 paintbrush
- 1 tip cleaner
If you already have some of these things you can always buy the other pieces to add to it. But with the July special or even with a coupon it really doesn't hurt to get the kit and just double up on some things.
Please note that you do get the basics in the kit, but you will need to buy/have addition items. And at Michaels you do get the Course Lesson plan on the first night of the class. The first night will be a demo night and your instructor should go over everything you will need for the class.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask here or PM me and I will try to answer what I can. ![]()
Thanks TexasSugar !!! I will definitely be making a run to Evansville now over the weekend.
The more I think about it, the more I love the idea of actually learning from someone. I can read a book, but until I actually see how they do it in front of me, then I really think I got it. Right now I know a few of the basics and know that some people have said they have gotten some pretty novice teachers, but they have to know more than me.
Plus the upside to this, if I am taking classes, then I won't feel so guilty in buying cake supplies because I NEED them.
I've brought home 2 of each size of the 6", 8" & 10" pans these last few weeks, plus bought several cake mixes on sale along with several bags of powdered sugar. My husband keeps wondering what I am going to do with all of it, lol.

I have my 3rd class tonight so I am going to ask my instructor why I had to pay $12.50 for each class!! I want to thank you all for letting me know this!!!
Sarah, so what happened? Did they refund your money?
Yes they refunded me my $37.50. The girl told me she couldn't believe they did that to me. She was very apologetic, I told her not to worry about it that mistakes happen. Now it is all taken care of, thanks for asking!!
I just took classes 1 and 3 at my local Michaels. You will need to buy a lot of supplies if you don't have them already. I asked friends and family to clip the % off coupons for there or Joanne's (Michaels will honor them) and used them for everything-and I'm a newbie so I had to buy everything! I also got the classes at a special for 1/2 off $12.50 each course) If you can get your sylabus ahead of time you can get a jump start on getting your supplies using %off coupons. I would highly reccomend saving up coupons and keeping them handy! I saved a bundle!
Hi All!! I am just finishing up my Class I, my special was half price 12.50. I didnt have to buy the kit, because my kids got me the 101 piece set for Mother's Day. So, course I only cost me 12.50. In July the instructor is only teaching course III so I signed up for that, with the bounce back coupon so the course wass 20.00 and I got my kit for 1 cent GREAT DEAL!! I am looking forward to see what August special is. Let me tell you, my instructor is a kick in the pants, has a great personality and alot of knowledge. I love THURSDAY!! LOL.... Now....I gotta go practice those roses, I need 6 for tomorrow. I gotta post my pics too!!!! Have a great day all!!! I really LOVE this site!!!!
I have been following this post and just wanted to add my two cents. I, too, am a Wilton instructor and I see that Michael's, JoAnn's and AC Moore are mentioned but there are other places (in other geographical areas) that offer Wilton classes. In TN, besides Micheal's and JoAnn's, classes are also offered at Hobby Lobby stores and there are some local cake supply stores that offer Wilton classes. Also, the local Adult Ed program offers them. And when we had Garden Ridge stores they offered them and the Old Time Pottery store used to offer them. So you might want to do some more checking in your area. You might find them offered in the least expected places.
I think it was on page one of this forum that someone listed the Wilton link for the "class locater".
You really do not need a lot of pans when you are first starting out. I had two 8 inch pans to start with. If you already have an 8 or 9 inch round pan, that will work fine for courses one and two. I think the kit in course three has an oval pan in it. i would not invest a ton of money until you are sure what you want to do. Have fun at the classes!
I start my wilton class the secund week in aug. I had looked around and most of them were like 15-20 bucks. The one I am takeing is 50 per course but the lady is a small business owner and took half an hour out of her day to talk to me about it, I really think she will be the better instructor and worth the money. I am going to go ahead and pay the fee because she has 17 students on the listand she only takes 8 per class, I dont want to miss out on it.I have held off buying alot of things because Im not sure what will come with the kits and I dont want to waste any money.
I finish up class 2 this Saturday and then I am going to take class 3. Since I will be paying for class 3 before June ends, I'll get the June special of half-off (12.50) plus the bounce back coupon of $5.00 so I will pay $7.50 for class 3!
I had 2 9" round pans and I used them for all my course 1 cakes. Course 2, I am using the oval pans that came in the kit. Course 3, I am going to permanently "borrow" some more pans from my mother.
It's not like she uses them, after the wedding cake she made for me fell and was a rather large disaster, she gave up cake making.

I'm not sure what store you are at, but as far as what I know, when you sign up you get the promotion for the month of the class you are signing up for, not the month you sign up for the class.
I know at Michaels we have sign up sheets with a bar code. The bar code is for that months special. So you can pay in April for a July class, but you still pay the July special.
I'm in CA and the whole thing makes no sense to me. The instructor kept trying to explain why we should sign up by Friday for a $7.50 class or wait if wanted the penny kit deal but no using the bounce back coupon then because it would have expired.
Someone else asked if we had to sign up for the class when we paid for it and she said no. At this store evidently you can pay for a class and then not take it for several months.
She was telling people who don't want to take class 3 now because it's meeting over the summer and moving to Friday night to just pay for it and then they can take it in Sept. when she holds it again.

The bounce back coupons are suppose to be used by the end your current class. It is the stores way of saying thank you for signing up for the next class right away.
I'm not sure who at the store you can ask about this, but it really sounds screwy and unfair to the students. Personally I would rather use it on the 1 cent promotion. Then you would be paying $20 for the class and getting the kit for a penny. Which means you would save almost $25.
If it is at Michaels, I would consider talking to the events coridanatior and asking him/her about it. They may not know the answer, but maybe they would look in to it.
