I am doing a "We'll miss you!" cake for a coffee tomorrow. I am using white tip 191 drop flower, white for the writing, and electirc pink buttercream icing. I am planning on using the Wilton Icing Sculptor for the sides. I have never used it and thought I would give it a whirl.

This is only my third cake since finishing Course II. Any suggestions on a border? I did a cake with basketweave and rope border yesterday, so I want to try something a little different today.

Also, do you think writing in white will look good or should I go with a different color?

I like the reverse shell border for a cake for a female. It's pretty. And works up fast. I am in the habbit now of doing my borders in white and putting little dots of colors in the pointed part of each shell. I use colors that were used in the cake. This way, I don't worry about not having enough of the color to go around the whole border of the cake.

I have probably a dumb question but is there a 'tutoria' on how to do the reverse shell & rope borders? I am really new and have not taken any classes but I do have the 'practice sheets' that explain how but I just cannot get it, I think I need to actually 'see' someone do it. Any help or tips would be appreciated. (sorry to steal this thread for my own use)

I love tip 12 "balls" for a femal's cake on the bottom, then a smaller tip "balls" on top, if any. That's just me though. I think they are so classy.

I was thinking "balls" would be pretty, too. I did not think of doing the two different sizes though.

Linda, I love the idea of adding the dots of colors to the reverse shell! That would be a nice touch.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I was going to PM Littlelinda and ask the same question, so I don't think it is dumb. I have tried the reverse shell and I do okay with it, but it could be much, much better. I would also love to see someone doing it as well. Thanks!

My "fiesta" cake is an example with reverse shells with colored dots.

Assuming you know how to make a shell border, reverse shells are the same only you angle your tip towards the outside, inside, outside, inside ... as you make the shells.

I am sure there are some doing borders as well...worth a try i think~!

No. First I draw the image exactly the size it's going to be on the cake. I have 11x18 paper so I can always do a big picture.

I cut out the outside of the image with scissiors. Then I use a craft knife to cut slits on all the inner lines being careful not to cross slits and end up with holes! I put the hacked up paper on my crusted bc cake and gently press on the paper with a toothpick close to all the slits which makes lines in the bc. I remove the paper and trace the whole picture with tip 3. Fill in the colors with stars or tip 3 and smooth it out if the details are small. Then I re-outline again to make the image crisp.

This is a tedious process if there are a lot of details.

It does sound like a tedious process, but your cakes look really good. I am going to give it a try sometime. Thanks for the instructions.
