If I have never used fondant before am I crazy to jump right in with a square cake or do I need the practise of prefecting a round (or even accents) before attemping a sqare??

I am thinking of trying fondant for a family bridal shower coming up in June. I have never worked with it before. Should I skip the idea and work my way up to that level? I plan on practising before hand but wonder if for a newbie this is biting off more than I can chew??

Thanks in advance

My first fondant cake was a square. I'm not sure if it was because it was my first or not but I find them easier to do than the rounds.

If you plan on practicing, then I would say try that first. If you feel comfortable you can do it on the bridal shower cake, and if not just have a back up idea ready to go. Before I did it for a big event I'd do a practice run at home.

Nothing like getting stressed out trying something new on an important cake.

I just did a square fondant covered cake for a Wilton class. It was pretty easy, my problem was my BC underneath...it had melted and pooled on the sides.

the only way to learn is to try it out.

I definetly had a harder time the ONE time I've put fondant on a square cake (was a dummy). It just took some more smoothing and careful hand and smoother placement.

you can do it, just practice a bit first so you're not frazzled for the shower cake.

You can do it! There is a first time for everything, right? You'll just be killing two birds with one stone...

I watched an instructional video from satin ice and they said if you are doing a square cake, to start with the corners first, then do the sides. Don't know if it works, but a pro said it, so it's worth a try to me! thumbs_up.gif

Good luck!!!!

Thank you all for the replies. I have only done one other cake that wasn't for my kids' birthday parties so I am a bit nervous about doing this cake. I just want it to look nice! I have found a design here on cc that I would like to do and need to practice anyway so I will practice the fondant and design at the same time. Now what to do with the practice cake icon_rolleyes.gif .

Thanks again I just hope I am not biting off more than I can chew with this one!
