I will be making a basketball covered in fondant tomorrow and just wondered if there is anything I can use to achieve the texture of a basketball.
Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe you can use a napkin that doesn't have a specific design, I have seen the generic napkins that are just a "bumpy" design, but that may work. Otherwise, another bump.

Try the end of a decorating tip, it would take some time but it works good.

I have textured a football fondant cake, maybe this would work for a basketball as well. I bought a new Dobie scrub pad, just pressed against the fondant and it came out perfect texture.

I was thinking a fork might work too but it can be very time consuming.

I read someplace rolling an orange on the surface would work (pick an orange that has rough skin)

Go the dollar store and buy a basketball or football and cut it up. Instant impression mats! I use mine all the time for leather texture, even on LV purses.

I will be making one soon and I was thinking of those massage things with the little spines. They have them in mitts so they cover a large surface area at one time. Haven't tried it yet.

When I did one, I used a clean piece of tulle (the coarse type). Lay a piece over it and press w/your hands. Makes the little bumps perfectly

jmt1714 your basketball looks great. The one that I've done was with buttercream. I like the meat tenderizer idea. Or what about the non slip mats you use in the drawers.

This thread was interesting - just goes to show there is no "right way" or "wrong way" - every one has their little tricks and techniques

Your cake looks great! When I made my BB cake, I used a sm round icing tip & it took a long time. Maybe next time I'll try the meat tenderizer. You are talking about the mallet thing, right?
