My daughter's first birthday theme is "One is Fun" (http://www.1stwishes.com/Celebrate_Theme.aspx?id=393). I was thinking of doing a two tier (stacked construction) fondant covered cake with her handprints. Here's my dilema. How do I get her handprints on it (other than sticking her hand in food color)? Any suggestions?

I was trying to think of a good way of getting this done, and the only thing I can think of, is that you may be able to get a rubber stamp made of her hand prints? I know that they make hand print stamps already (I have little hands and feet stamps), but stores like office max, etc can make them custom for you. I have no idea what the cost on that would be, but it may be worth it, so you don't have to worry about "inking" your daughters hands over and over. Also, as long as you use them just on food items, I think that would be ok.

Maybe you could trace around her hand on paper or cardboard and then cut it out to make a stencil and then use the stencil to put the hands all over the cake or alternatively you could cut hands out of fondant or gumpaste and stick them on.

I have no idea if this would work but what about dusting her hands in luster dust or something similar?

I saw this one somewhere on the internet (not sure where!)

To me it looks like they pressed the babys hands and feet into the fondant before it dried then painted the colour into the indentations.

best of luck with you cake!

Try making a mold of your daughter's hands with Crayola's Model Magic (non-toxic) & after 24 hours (when it is dry) You will have a mold to press fondant into.

I ended up using rubber stamps from the craft store with Wilton food color slightly watered down with vanilla. I think they came out pretty well!
