This question is to anyone who's made the fondant or gum paste sombrero for a fiesta themed cake. There are several versions of this in the gallery. I just wonder if you can give me some tips?! icon_lol.gif

I don't have the Wilton '03 yearbook so maybe I can just get a quick tutorial from someone. Do you have any trouble removing the base of the hat from the bowl (used to form)? I'm planing on making this hat with gum paste... first time user of this medium.

As for the center section, not sure how to make. I have a metal top that goes to a small thermos that I'm considering using. Thought I could mold the desired shape over the top, but again... when dry will it just fall off? Do I need to prepare the surface first?

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

Thanking the experts in advance!! thumbs_up.gif

if you are molding the gumpaste on something, just dust the botom of the gumpaste with cornstarch and it will slip off easily when it is dry

Thanks Katydidz, I'll consider PM'ing her if I run into trouble. I've got the base of the hat forming in a bowl at the moment and have finished the top too. Just waiting for things to dry a bit before assembling. My first attempt at the hat wasn't great... it cracked as I took it from the bowl too soon. At least that's my assumption! icon_rolleyes.gif
