They people throwing the shower said the couple didn't know the sex of the baby . . . what do you think of the colors? They specifically wanted blue and pink flowers, but I thought blue and pink on the whole cake would be too much . . . what do you all think?

the flowers and the baby are gumpaste. I just molded it freehand. The head and the body are two pieces (the body is just a lump), and the arms and hands were separate, and then all put together with egg white (the head was molded on a stick and I inserted that into the body). The face is colored with petal dust and I painted the eyes with food coloring. The hat and the blanket were done after the baby was dry. the trim on the blanket and the pom ont he hat were made with a clay gun.

When people ordering cakes know what they want, It doesn't matter if we think it will look good or not. I have recently run into this situation. I think you did a good job on the cake but If I was the one odering it and I requested pink and blue flowers and this was the cake I got I might be a little sad that the pink and blue flowers were not more noticable. Also I might wonder about why the yellow flowers? Please do not get me wrong, I think this is an adorable cake. I can see you spent alot of time on this,I'm just trying to be in the customers mind-set. Your work is fabulous, and I hope your customers love it to death!

I 100% agree rhondie - I wasn't clear before.

They wanted the pink and blue flowers, but they didn't care what the color scheme was on the rest of the cake. Since the invitations (I got one so I could see the color scheme) was green and yellow, that was why I went that route. I thought a pink and blue cake wouldn't fit in when everything else on the table was going to green and yellow. Hence the green icing and the yellow flowers.

The sweetpeas I did in pink and blue per their request. that was the only thing I was told they wanted for sure - they left the rest up to me.

good points though. It was just picked up - she loved it,so that's all that matters!!

thanks to all for your comments, by the way, I appreciate your feedback.

Yippie skippie!! I'm glad that she loved it. Knowing that the cake matches the rest of the color scheme is a total plus for her, very smart on your part. Good job jmt1714. If it's not too bold to ask...what did you charge for it? I can see this was a very time consumming cake! -rhondie

$65 - it's a 9x13, and a 1" single layer 6: round that is torted and filled

$50 is my base price for the cake (I didn't charge for the round, as that was my doing . . . I had an issue with the cake underneath and had to do a cut and paste since part of it didn't bake correctly).

I did the flowers on the cheap because 1) it is a friend of mine who bought the cake and 2) some of the flowers I made ages ago for a different cake and I just wanted to get rid of them (the roses)

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!

I just did a cake for a baby shower (girl) almost exactly like this.

11x18 sheet filled with a 2 layer filled 6 inch "baby" bed on top.

I charged $100 for the cake, but when the Grandmother saw the cake--I delivered it--she started to cry! For a moment, I was SO FREAKED OUT (thinking she hated it) but she insisted on giving me more.

I'm no one to argue...

Dude! I can't wait to be like you guys. I would love to get paid for making a cake. I'm still at the "making cakes at cost for friends and free for family" stage. At what point do you transition?-rhondie

Rhondie, if that cake had been for my friend instead of a friend of hers, it would have been free. I still bring a cake to every party if I'm asked to bring something, and I never charge for those - like the he basketball cake in my photos that was for my nephew.

I think this one may start getting me a little more regular business, but I travel almost every week mon-fri, so it would be tough to do too many.
