Someone requested that I make a very big cake for them.
I was thinking in putting 4 square cakes( 12 inch) together and icing it as one.
This is the first time I will be doing this.
So I need all the help and tips in this.

define "very big". how many people? I've seen people think a "big volume" cookie order is 6 dozen. (And when I stop laughing, I tell them I dont' consider it volume until it becomes a 50 dozen LONG STANDING REPEAT order.)

What I really need to know is,
Do I have to slice off the side crust to join these cakes?

We did a huge memorial cake for a high school who lost 2 football players it's in my pics with the painted rainbow on it). We put together 2 1/2 sheets on top of each other and then 2 1/3 sheets out the sides. We iced them all as one. No trimming was needed around the edges, but you may need to trim where to flavors meet that don't rise to the same height. Be sure to have a really stable board and put icing where 2 cakes will meet.

Good Luck - hope this makes sense!
