Does anyone have the problem of the people around you or your customers thinking that making a cake from scratch and decorating it should take an hour like it does with there box mix. Even my BF who watches me do them does not understand why it takes so long. I have to make 2!! fathers day cakes for sun. and I planed to start on Wednesday but my blades for my mixer RUSTED!! but he didn't want to go out and than Thursday I had a family emergency, today there is a birthday, and tomorrow I am watching 3 infants all day! (bf volunteered me for that) He keeps distracting me every time I start working on a cake. All I have done is the BC! Is it me or is making a cake or cooking of any kind draining even when you dont have the distractions? He seems to think that all I do is read a recipe. icon_confused.gif

It is not the making a cake that is draining, it is the distractions!!! Cooking ... I don't know.

I agree with you, it takes time and effort to produce great cakes like the ones on this site. Simple solution for you BF...have him make one, bring over three kids, don't have all the supplies, and see how well he does. icon_wink.gifthumbs_up.gif

Yes, I find myself "dreading" the cheesecakes/cakes sometimes, too. But then I actually deliver them, get a great picture, and people "oooh & ahhh" over them, it's usually worth it! But, yeah--I think we all "dread" it sometimes... icon_sad.gif

Maybe you should just have a talk with him, and let him know how important your hobby/business is to you, and that you need more support?

I'm really lucky--my husband & boys absolutely LOVE my business---especially since they get the "bowls & beaters & leftovers!" icon_smile.gif

I hope you continue to strive--you do awesome work, and if this is your artistic outlet, YOU DESERVE this "Yuki time." thumbs_up.gif

Best to you,

Thank goodness my husband is very understanding and supportive of my cake decorating. He is very helpful and entertains our son when I am busy. He's also great about helping me with designs and stuff. icon_biggrin.gif

So sorry to hear that!! I know some of my customers think that, but as for hubby: he's soooooo understanding. He's the one to watch the kids when I bake (usually I try to do it when they're in school or sleeping but sometimes I just can't) He even comes out with ideas, and find tips and tricks to help me. Maybe it's because he always has a slice of cake in his lunch for work and he wants me to keep that up icon_smile.gif He even makes more publicity for me that I do myself. But some customers are just pain in the b*** when it comes to say the price, and also the time frame for them to order. Of course if they're too short on time, it's a box cake. When they want a real scratch recipe cake, GIVE ME TIME!!!!

hope you'll get everything done in time this weekend. I have two cakes for tomorrow (1 11X15 sheet cake and 1 6X6 square) and one cheesecake for Sunday. So no wonder it smells sugary in my house today icon_surprised.gif

have a nice day

I think he is starting to understand it is just he is (I hope this does not put me in the wrong forum) energetic. Making a cake after work, exp. since I start work at 6:30 am and dealing with his playfulness can be very difficult.

As a side note did any of you start getting headachs at the end of the day when you started cake decorating?

Yes, It can be really hard to get cakes done with a dh and kids around! I usually don't even bother decorating during the day when the kids are awake because of all the distractions. I also have a 5 month old baby girl that I have to watch ALL the timeicon_wink.gif

My dh sometimes doesn't feel like helping me out with the baby at night, or else he is working at night, so I'll have to stop a couple times to nurse the baby and hopefully get to bed by 2 a.m.

I get headaches too! I tend to wake up with a headache after a long night of decorating. Drinking a lot of water helps! And thank god for coffee!!!!!

Have to ask, because I keep reading this from people. How does it take you longer to make it from scratch? A cake from scratch doesn't take a lot of time, expecially if you have a stand mixer. I just put a 1/4 sheet cake and 3 6" layers in the oven, and making the batter took a grand total of about 12 minutes (and I know because I see th time I turn my oven on (mine oven records it) an what time I pop the pans into the oven. That includes prepping the pans.

I have this bad habit to want a challenge if I see 3 recipes one with 5 ingredients and little work one with 10 ingredients and medium work and than one with 50 ingredients and very complex I will choose the 50 ingredient one. I love to cook, it is draining but I still love it. Still when I make from scratch I normally freeze the cakes, and cook the 3-inch deep ones. I put a lot of time and effort in to it because I really want it to be perfect.

I also don't have the money for a stand mixer, if I spend the money it will be a good one.

BTW my BF hates cake, icon_cry.gif, so if you hear me talk about my co workers trying my stuff you will all know why.
