Does anyone have a simple way to roll, cut & apply fondant ribbon to larger cakes? I am wrapping several fondant ribbons around buttercream cakes this weekend and the base cake is 16in.....that is going to be a long strip of fondant that I am afraid will tear during the placement. Do you use thinned out fondant to adhere or piping gel? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You should roll up the fondant ribbon from both ends...and then place it on the cakeboard and unroll it from both ends as well...
When you have finished, overlap the two ends of the ribbon and carefully cut through both layers of ribbon...taking the overlapping part off and you will be left with a ribbon that is very well seamed

I hope that helps...

Thanks for your tips.....I hope I can do it! What do you use to adhere the ribbon to the cake? (and do you put that on the cake or on the back of the ribbon?) I don't plan to put it on the cake until the buttercream has crusted. Thanks again for your help!

usually just a touch of water on the back of the fondant accent would be good but with the ribbon, I would take a barely wet paintbrush and just as you are unrolling the ribbon lightly brush the ribbon back with it...

Don't use too much water or the ribbon will slip and slide...use only enough that you think it is not enough...BARELY damp...in my experience, that is what works best...

If you have troubles, there is always someone who can lend you a hand..

I cut up my vinyl rolling mat into strips to accomodate the long strips around the cake. Brush gum glue or your adhesive method on before sticking to the cake. Tack one end down and set it against the cake and lightly pressing to get adhesion. Peel it off! It worked!

Using the vinyl probably gives the ribbon extra stability for placement....I hadn't thought of that. I have actually not worked with the vinyl yet - although I have heard a lot about it ...especially with rolled bc which is what I am going to use since it doesn't dry out as fast as fondant. Does WalMart carry the vinyl or will I need to get it from a specialty shop? Thanks for your help...Much appreciated!

PS: Have the ribbons ever weighted down and pulled your icing ? or do you only work on top of fondant? (this one is regular bc - and I'm a little worried about the ribbons pulling down the sides of the cake.) Your thoughts?

JLJJ, you should be able to buy the vinyl at Walmart in the fabric department. I'm going to have to try the vinyl trick myself!!!

Yes, you can get vinyl at Wal Mart. It's in the fabric section.
