Hi everyone, I was hoping someon could tell me if a cake that I am making will be ok for travel. I am making it for a friend's sister. It's for a baby shower. We live in Tampa, Fl and the cake has to go to North Carolina. It is a stacked 2 tier covered in fondant. I'm just concerned about the decorations and it being stacked. It's a 8" and 4" cake, also they will be 2 layers.

Thanks for any help, my friend changed her mind on the cake that she wanted. It was supposed to a 9x13 cake.

Thanks,
Michelle

I would worry about the heat--I went to a baby shower a couple of weeks ago--the cake arrived by one of the people giving the shower and the fondant was completely melted-it was a big mess. They brought the cake in a SUV with the AC on and only drove about 18 miles.
Don't know if this helps---but it soooooooo hot right now
Good luck

Thanks for your responses. I'm actually not going, it's for my friend to take to her sister's. She wouldn't be able to put it together.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Michelle

Instead of doing a stacked cake could you do a tiered cake? Get the pillars all set in the bottom layer and box it up. Then all your friend would have to do is take the top layer on the plate and put it on the pillars? You could make them really short pillars so their wasn't much space between the tiers and then send some filler with her? Would also be easier to cut I think.

Then you could pack each one in a box and i would suggest in a cooler with some ice. Look for a post by FerretDeprived. She was seeking advice for a cake to travel 12 hours and had some good suggestions and she also had success.

I think leily's idea is the best one. You could put it together and try to fit it in a cooler, but there'd be the worry about keeping it level atop a pile of ice, which will shift as it melts, and of course it might get the box wet.

IMO - I'd never do a stacked cake if I wouldn't personally be there to stack it.

I made a 2-tier that travelled 2 hours to Dallas--stacked. I put it on 1/2" foamboard, shapened the dowel in pencil sharpener and made sure it went all the way through the bottom board. Don't know if it would have survived 10 hours, tho.
