Piping Gel/stained Glass Question

Does piping gel have a taste? I want to do a stained glass cake next week, but want to make sure it's still going to taste good. Also, for anyone that has done this before, will buttercream work for the outlines, or is royal icing the better way to go? Thanks for your help!
It does have a sweet taste. When I did mine in my cake decorating class a while back we outlined in black piping gel then filled in with the colored piping gel. Hope this helps.
Piping gel has a very sweet taste like glucose. When I did mine I outlined it in royal icing because it gives a strong edge to work against & the colours don't run.
To me it is simular to clear corn syrup in taste. And your stain glass window can be done with black piping gel outlined and be just fine.
Thanks for your help. I'm going to give the stained glass a shot. Anyway, what's a little extra sweetness when you're already eating icing, right?
For those of you who have done stained glass work before, do you loosen the piping gel with water first?

I outline in royal icing and use the piping gel right out of the container to fill in (after coloring).
That is gorgeous! What did you end up using for the black lines (gel or RI)?
I love the design and the colors! And your b/c is super smooth too. Great job!
I ended up using BC for the outlines, then painted them w/ antique silver luster dust mixed w/ vanilla extract. It was more than a little tedious. Thanks for the comments!
