Making A Golf Cake For Father's Day!

Making icing is always what messes my cakes up lol
I'm planning on making a buttercreme icing which I've never done before so I need an idiot proof recipe and then I also need some golf cake ideas. I was thinking of adding some clear blue icing for water, and some brown sugar for sand.
I'm also not sure what shape to make it in..I was thinking an 11x17, 2-layer cake Anyone have other ideas?
Thanks!
I always just use the Wilton icing recipe but I use water instead of milk. I also add a tiny bit of popcorn salt to cut the sweetness.
I've done several golf cakes. I recommend using crushed graham crackers for sand...easier on the palate. You can add icing gel for water if you like. Just tint it blue with colors.
I made little fondant golf balls and dimpled them with the end of a flower sculpting tool. You can also make a pin and flag using popsicle sticks and fondant. You can make green pull out grass using that tip...can't remember the number...hmmm
Wilton has lots of cute golf cake ideas if you search their web site.
Hope this helps,
C
I have a golf cake I did on a 12x18 that came out pretty cool. Modeled after the 18th at pebble beach. I think it is in my pictures, if not, it is definitely at my website (click on www under this message)
