Number Of Dowels Used? Poll

Wow....it appears that I may be in overdrive mode! I'm curious to know how many different calculation methods there are for dowel support. I hear about cakes falling, then find out later that the number of dowels used is questionable. How do YOU determine this?

I usually go by the size of the cake. If it's just a 6in, I only use Three. An 8in, I use four....etc. This doesn't count the one that goes down the center of the whole thing.

I probably over-dowel, but I try to put as many wooden dowels in the lower tier as the size of the tier above it, e.g. an 8 inch on top of a 10 inch would get 8 dowels in the 10 inch. If I'm using hidden pillars/plastic dowels, I use 1/2 as many.
